Dr. Meyer Brings Specialized Eye Care Services to FGH

Specialized medical services are closer than you might realize. For instance, Franklin General Hospital is pleased to announce that local patients needing medical or surgical eye care can access that service locally.

Since May, opthalmalogist Dr. Mark Meyer, an associate of the North Iowa Eye Clinic in Mason City, performs eye surgeries at FGH each month. He replaces Dr. Waugh, who relocated this spring. According to Dr. Meyer, the procedures he does at FGH are primarily cataract surgeries, as well as some plastic eyelid procedures.

Dr. Meyer works in close cooperation with Hampton optometrist Dr. Craig Semler. Individuals who have concerns about their eyes are encouraged to schedule an appointment with Dr. Semler, who will make a referral to Dr. Meyer, if appropriate. Dr. Meyer holds clinic hours in Dr. Semler's office the fourth Wednesday of each month and schedules procedures at FGH for the fourth Tuesday.

"The beauty of this relationship with Dr. Semler," comments Dr. Meyer, "is the benefit that it provides for our patients, allowing them to receive eye care without having to travel."

A native of Hartley, Iowa, Dr. Meyer describes himself as "a Midwestern farmboy" who values the rural way of life. "Having grown up in a rural area, I enjoy the opportunity to be part of a small community," comments Dr. Meyer. "It is the reason my wife and I wanted to come back to Iowa, and so far, it has certainly met our expectations."

After graduating from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Mark Meyer earned a degree in hospital and health administration at the University of Iowa before attending medical school there. He did his residency at the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison. He and his wife, Ann, who is a native of Storm Lake, now live in Mason City along with their three children, Matthew, Makenzie, and Megan.
